Creators behind NFTs CryptoPunks, Larva Labs, released a new collection called Meebits. Resales have already grossed $3 Million on OpenSea
With Meebits, Larva Labs looks to replicate past success in the NFT market. The development team of two behind the wildly popular CryptoPunks NFT series has announced a new set of NFTs called Meebits. The CryptoPunks has been wildly popular and has spawned a bunch of spinoffs on its own. One of those spinoffs is a toes-inspired collection called CrypToes.
Where CryptoPunks were pixelated and randomly generated 2D icons, Meebits are 3D avatars rendered in voxels. With their blocky arms and vaguely cuboid heads, Meebits may remind you of the 3D characters from Minecraft or Roblox. They’re algorithmically generated, and attached to NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain.
That’s by design, according to a press release.
We think that, just like 8-bit pixel art, the minimalism and accessibility of voxel art will prove timeless and endearing for generations to comeMatt Hall and John Watkinson
Whichever Meebits aren’t claimed by the end of the week, of the 20,000 total, will be sold directly from the company. So far, these NFTs have already generated 1,120 ETH in sales on the resale market, according to data from OpenSea. That’s more than $3.7 million at today’s prices. But even with double the supply of CryptoPunks, Meebits are poised for success: one already sold for nearly $675,000 earlier today.
The CryptoPunks are 10,000 uniquely generated characters. No two are exactly alike, and each one of them can be officially owned by a single person on the Ethereum blockchain. Originally, they could be claimed for free by anybody with an Ethereum wallet, but all 10,000 were quickly claimed. Each of them can have some attributes, like a hat, or a pipe, or earrings.
The most sought-after punks are the alien ones, Only nine such “Alien” punks exist in the CryptoPunks universe. Making them very valuable. There are also apes and zombie punks. Unlike most NFT’s, CryptoPunks pixel data is stored in the blockchain, whereas some other NFT’s are just blockchain URLs that lead to an asset. If it wasn’t for the punks, we would not have all the NFT’s that we have now, and they wouldn’t be so popular.
